Today's Tip # 18 from "30 Quick Tips for Better Health" by Don Verhulst, MD., Enjoy a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle.
Yesterday's tip Eat Foods your Heart Loves really had a huge impact on me. I work for a Chiropractor; one of my patients came in yesterday afternoon and shared that he had just gotten out of the hospital from a small heart attack. I could not believe what I was hearing. He also shared that he is now on a Mediterranean diet to get his heart healthy again. What blew my mind was hearing that information when I had just finished writing the blog about our heart. Being in the age bracket we really need to start taking care of ourselves. I truly felt that I was on the right track with what we are doing. It was like a confirmation that we really need to take better care of ourselves, because this could happen to any of us. Mortality....that is crazy for me to even think about. My body will be 45 next month, but my mind is still in High School...I still feel like a kid...but now we are touchable. Today's tip is again talking about the HEART -- H is for eating Healthy foods and nutrients, E is for exercise...which I have gotten back on that wagon...I started at Anytime Fitness, and they really seem to care about the goals that I have. I am working out in Woodstock IL...Mo who runs the gym really takes the time to make sure that my needs are met. He will even walk two doors down to see where I have been at, if I hadn't been in the gym...to me that is great service. If you are in my area...check out Anytime Fitness in Woodstock IL. You can start out small if you have not worked out for a while....go for a walk, walk up and down your stairs a few times to get things moving, when cleaning your house make it a race and get your heart rate up. You can even dance...turn on the music loud and dance until you are all sweaty....make sure you are drinking lots of water as well. Exercise will also help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. A is for antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free-radical damage that ages the cardiovascular system. Vitamins A, C, and E, along with eating your fruits, veggies and whole grains. Also take a good multivitamin-minerals supplement that your body will absorb. R is for restrict. Restrict excess fats from your diet. Restrict yourself from fried foods and animal fats as much as possible. Restrict yourself from simple sugars as well, like the junk food, processed food, anything that has white sugar in it. This will help you keep your heart lean and working well. T is or temperance. This means we should practice self-control and moderation. When we keep our mind calm our body can heal. Practice keeping your emotions in check so you are not getting yourself all crazy. Also, you want to make sure you are reading your labels...make sure it says 100 whole grains....if there is long a list of ingredients; chances are it is not good for you....choose the food that have whole ingredients. Labels are very tricky...
There it is my friends...I am starting to really feel a lot better with the whole foods that I am eating, rather than all the processed foods. I have stayed away from the alcohol for the past 23 days and I am noticing a big difference in my stomach. Again, thank you so much for following this blog...I really feel like we can do this together.
Have a great rest of your day!!! Chat with you tomorrow!!!
